On November 13, 2023, Prof. Hideo Ohno, co-founder of spintronics, rector of Tohoku University, received Honorary Doctorate from the University of Warsaw. The ceremony took place in the Senate Hall of the Kazimierzowski Palace. The laudation was delivered by Prof. Andrzej Twardowski from the Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw, supervisor of the Honorary Doctorate. Prof. Twardowski emphasized that in addition to cooperation with the Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw, Prof. Ohno has been collaborating very fruitfully for many years with Prof. Tomasz Dietl and his group. In his speech, Prof. Ohno mentioned three physicists whom he considered very important for the development of his scientific career. They were: Prof. Leo Esaki, Nobel Prize winner, with whom he collaborated during a research internship at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, Prof. Stephan von Molnár and Prof. Dietl. He also mentioned that their joint paper published in Science in 2000 is one of the most cited papers in which the authors are affiliated with Tohoku University. Taking advantage of Prof.’s Ohno and other Japanese physicists arrival to Warsaw, at the Staszic Palace on November 13 and 14, the 5th Polish – Japanese Workshop on Spintronics was organized.
